Coming Soon! "Level II" excerpt
He grabbed Jason by the shirt and dragged him up the attic
ladder and then moved to the corner of the attic where the roof was already
being lifted by the water. Holding his hand out with a swift upward motion of
his palm, the roof flew off and was taken by the storm wind.
He hoisted Jason to the roof and reached for Samantha who
was now just behind him with her hand outstretched keeping the water at bay.
They climbed onto the roof and huddled as a family on the peak. Exhausted,
Jason Sr. and Samantha knew neither of them had the strength to make the run to
the north levee.
Jason Sr. reached into his pocket and screamed into Jason’s ear. “FIND HER! FIND THE RUSSIAN!” Then he tore two pieces of shingle from the mangled roof and shoved them into Jason’s hands. “RUN!” He pushed Jason toward the edge opposite Samantha, who was weakening. As the water engulfed his parents, Jason ran.

Excerpt #4 from - The Mountain
The valley turns to a
glistening ocean of heat, and the distance transcends the scale of anything you
can imagine for such a small mountain. The watery grey and purple of the desert
valley at sunset swallows your heart and leaves you speechless. We always go
there when the opportunity presents itself and we never speak. It did not fail
to deliver this time. It would be some time before I would return.

'Scrambling off my perch and racing to grab the pole, now lodged under the surface but hopefully still attached to the beast that had torn it from my hands, I lifted it up, and gave a long pull back to see if there was weight on the other end. He was still there; the beast was attached! I planted my feet, now freezing in the mountain lake shallows.'

'The first hour was usually boring, but when a rookie was present, there was fun sense of newness. Aims wasn’t a stranger to the outdoors. She brimmed with excitement, shouting, “Hit it!” before every little hump and turn. It made the first switchbacks that were usually monotonous a little more bearable. There were miscellaneous obstacles that presented themselves as options along the way. Side hills, desert washes, boulders and other off-road items just waiting to be driven over, under or through. Aims wanted them all, but unless we planned on making camp today, we couldn’t hit them all. Though one, Russell and I had already decided, was on the “must” list. The Hill of Death.'
